With a full seminar programme, the regional heats of the WorldSkills UK Landscape Gardening Competition running, a busy demonstration area, plenty of new exhibitors and a new ContractorZone in place, the 2012 Landscaping Show has plenty going on!

Seminar Programme:

The show takes place on Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th June at Stoneleigh Park, near Coventry, and will introduce eight industry experts who will be speaking in seminars across both days. Topics include the opportunities opening up for landscapers following new legislation; the Olympic Legacy and how it is being delivered; the impact landscaping may have on climate change, and detail on the new Joint Council of Landscape Industry’s (JCLI) Homeowner’s Consultancy Agreement and Landscape Contract. There will also be a session on new developments in Vectorworks Landmark design software.

WorldSkills Competition:

In addition, and for the first time at the BALI Show, 14 student teams from eight colleges will be rolling up their sleeves to take part in the regional heats of the WorldSkills UK Landscape Gardening Competition. The competition area will be set up alongside the show’s demonstration area so that visitors can watch the students compete for a place in the final at the NEC in November by creating identical gardens against the clock.

Live Demonstrations:

Visitors will also be able to watch live demonstrations of the latest products and benefit from the expertise of industry specialist companies such as Ransomes Jacobsen, Bartlett Tree Experts and Rigby Taylor.

New ContractorZone:

The show has also introduced a ContractorZone this year for the first time. Following discussions, the National Contractors’ Forum (NCF) – a group of influential major contractors working in the landscape and grounds maintenance sector – has reached an agreement to partner with BALI and the official launch of the BALI-NCF partnership will take place at the show over lunch on the first day. The following BALI members have taken a stand in the newly created area, which will also house the BALI team; Enterprise, G Burley & Sons, Gavin Jones, Glendale Managed Services, Grace Landscapes, Ground Control, HFN Landscapes, John O’Conner, Kings Residential Landscapes, Norris & Gardiner, Oak View Landscapes, PC Landscapes, Robert Field Landscapes and Serco.

MassPrivateI: Creating a nation of spies, your landscaper & trash …

Deerfield Beach, FL- This city has a new way of fighting crime: Employees who are out and about, trimming trees or picking up litter on the beach, are officially on the lookout for signs of a crime.

The program is the first of its kind in South Florida, Sudler said, though there are similar programs in Illinois, Texas and in Central Florida. He’s never heard of a city paying employees for good information, though.
Adding non-cops to law enforcement is a growing trend. Baltimore established iWatch last year, a program which encourages citizens to text or send videos and photos of suspicious behavior. Oakland and dozens of other municipalities around the county have established websites dedicated to reporting suspicious behavior.

Illinois and Texas have programs similar to the one launched by the BSO, although they have yet to pay workers for turning in tips.

A group of about 70 landscapers and garbage truck drivers got training from the Broward Sheriff’s Office this week so they know what to look for. Another group of about 35 will train next week.

BSO calls the program Operation B.O.L.O. When an employee reports something suspicious, on-duty BSO deputies will drive to the scene. If the information leads to an arrest, the employee gets a reward of up to $ 100.
“We’re targeting employees out and about throughout the day, who can be an extra set of eyes and ears,” said BSO Deerfield Police Chief Pete Sudler. “There’s no doubt while they’re out there, things are going on around them they’re not trained to spot yet.”

The program is the first of its kind in South Florida, Sudler said, though there are similar programs in Illinois, Texas and in Central Florida. He’s never heard of a city paying employees for good information, though.

The program is funded by BSO’s Law Enforcement Trust Fund, which is made up of funds seized during investigations. By Florida law, the trust fund must be spent on special programs or crime prevention and can’t be used to defray normal operating costs for a police department.

Do you Parent a Canine Landscaper? | Canine Chat: Dog Tales and …

Digging

Why does your dog dig, you ask? Many breeds are more prone to digging. Other dogs find it an activity to pass the time and expend pent up energy. If the behavior has become OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) you may want to Vet check the dog or speak with a canine behavior specialist.

Did you know, your ever watchful dog may learn to dig just by watching you tend to your garden? The family dog observes you digging up earth, releasing some interesting scent to plant your newly purchased shrubs or flowers and want to join in the fun. Or you may use compost or another highly scented ground cover that just begs for further investigation.

My suggestion to clients who choose to garden in the back yard is to train dogs to stay clear of prized areas. Training of course means due diligence prior to picking up a garden tool. Strategies include supervision of a young or new dog giving them an alternate game and teach the dog boundaries. Dogs can learn perimeter training. You may need the help of an experienced trainer for assistance. However, if there is no time for due diligence, then the path of least resistance may be in order which just means fencing off the coveted area or consider buying or building raised beds for vegetables.

If you parent a Terrier, Nordic or Spitz breed such as a Malamute, Husky, Samoyed, Shiba Inu and of course hounds such as the busy Dachshund best be on top of your game as these breeds find digging as normal as breathing. Your Labrador when bored can easily rival the Terrier in this ground game.

Some reasons dogs dig?
Digging is usually self rewarding to a dog left outside all day with nothing else to do.
1. Terrier means “earth” and these dogs were bred to go after and rid vermin from the earth which includes digging to get the prize
2. You may see your dog nesting or pawing at a dog bed or your sofa cushions to make the area just right to snooze. Same goes for the earth in your yard. Excavation helps create just the right feel for a nap. Below the surface of the topsoil is cool earth which feels better on toasty days to a heavily coated dog like a Malamute.
3. Exercise deprived dogs find it a way to expend energy
4. Dogs that rarely see beyond the fencing find digging fills their day. Boredom is one of the main reasons dogs dig as it can relieve stress from their monotonous day
5. Scent is powerful to a dog and if something left a scent that needs investigating then why not dig further to CSI the location
6. Digging is a means to an end and the end can be escape. Escape to find you, get attention from someone, or the dog may just have wanderlust and the need to explore. Very rewarding for the dog
7.Separation Anxiety is a powerful psychological symptom of a bigger picture and without help the dog can work itself up to a frenzy and dig to seek the comfort and help it needs

What to do?

c Diane Rich 2012
This Toy Poodle loves to dig.  I suggested to the owners they build a sandbox for her. I also suggested some strategies to teach her to only dig in the sandbox vs. the garden areas. Within a week it was built, she loves it and chooses the sandbox over other tempting locations.

1.Leashed walks or runs before you go to work and after you get home
2.Hire a dog walker for mid day
3.Rotate toys to keep the dog’s interest
4.Some working owners who must keep the dog outdoors during the day, find that buying or building a sizable dog run with ample shade, dog house, toys and water and confining the dog when not supervised is the only answer
5.If dog does get access to yard when not supervised, make sure yard, gates and fencing are escape proof so dog cannot dig out under the fence
6.Provide an area in the yard specific for digging and teach the dog to dig in that location only
7.Fence off areas of your real estate that are No Dog zones
8.Build a sandbox using cedar boards, not treated lumber, size appropriate for your dog with 12” depth of sand. Bury some toys, introduce the dog to the spot and praise for digging there.
9.Redirect the dog from day one of any digging behavior to another activity. Punishing the dog after the fact is usually ineffective and old methods are cruel. Teach the dog what is acceptable behavior.
10.Live with it and be careful you don’t twist an ankle in one of the craters.

Landscapers The Latest To Target Local Crime « CBS Miami

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Criminals have long feared the long-arm of the law, but they may now fear the long-reach of the gardener.

Deerfield Beach officials have put together a plan for employees who trim trees, pick up litter on the beach, and handle other landscaping duties to be on the lookout for crime.

So far, approximately 70 city-employed landscapers and garbage truck drivers have received training on what to look for crime while their going through their daily tasks. If the tips lead to an arrest, the employee receives up to a $ 100 reward.

Deerfield Beach Police Chief Pete Sudler said this is the first such program in Broward County and it’s funded by a sheriff’s office trust fund.

A second group of 35 workers is set to train with Broward Sheriff’s Office next week.

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, BSO has previously trained more than 225 Waste Management garbage truck drivers to spot crimes as they drive through the county.
